The Good News for the day, March 28, 2018

Wednesday of Holy Week (259)

One of the Chosen Twelve, Judas Iscariot, went to some leading religious men and said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver (the price of prostitution or a slave), and from then on he looked for some chance to hand him over .On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, some of his followers approached Jesus and said, “Where do you want us to set up for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to such-and-such, and tell him, ‘The teacher says, “It is about time; in your house I’ll celebrate the Passover with my followers.”‘” Those followers did what Jesus had ordered andset up the Passover celebration. That evening, he shared the meal with the Twelve.  While they were eating, he said, “Here is a truth: one of you is going to betray me.” Deeply distressed at this, they began to say to him one after another, “Of course, it’s not me, is it?” He said in reply, “Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish at the same time I did is the one who will betray me. This Human Child indeed is going….as it is written of him… but woe to that man by whom This Human Child is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.” Then Judas (his betrayer) said in reply, “Of course, it isn’t m, Rabbi?” He answered, “You have spoken.” (Matthew 26)

An ominous tone runs through this passage—reader and listeners—you and I—know what is to happen, and Jesus feels it—and everybody else—is oblivious—having a good time—it is a celebrating of Freedom, the Passover.

And the Good News IS your freedom. You face the currents of negative that charge through our many dimensions—fears, death, loss, failures, embarrassments and hurts that no one knows—the casual dismissal, the careless put-down, the behind-the-back betrayal

Our Good News is our freedom—that, like Jesus, we accept—confront—these negatives and accept the hidden hand of God—that all deaths and defeats have a flip side–a sense of newness and freedom, a chance to create a world out of the chaos of what has happened. You are not oblivious. You see and hear and know that evil does come. But you are free of the burden. you have a peace that passes understanding It is God’s will, however reluctant our instinct is. We do accept because we are Free.
