Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent (254)
Jesus said to the Judeans: “Here is the truth: Everybody who adheres to what I am saying will never experience death.” Consequently, the Judeans said to him, “Now we’re sure that you are under the control of a demon. Abraham is dead—and so are the prophets—but you are saying ‘Everybody who adheres to what I am saying will never experience death.’ Are you better than our father Abraham, who has died? Or the prophets, who have died? Who are you making yourself out to be?” Jesus answered, “If I brag about myself, what I say is worthless. It is my Father who unveils my significance—the one of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ You don’t know him; I do know him. If I tried to say I don’t know him, I would be like you—a liar! But I do know Him—and I keep his word. Abraham your father felt glad to see my time; he saw it and was happy.” In response, the Judeans said to him, “You aren’t fifty years old yet and you have seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Here is the truth: before Abraham came to be, I already AM.” So, the Judeans picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus went into hiding—leaving the temple area. (John 8)
Over and over, Jesus is telling you about you—about your Father, your “permanence,” your “eternity”—right now. You are not dead. Abraham is timeless; you are timeless. Abraham is part of your living now—because of his Love. because of Sarah, because of Faith. You share those eternal traits, that Life, that Insight, that Newness.
Yes, it takes a commitment to that “kingdom of God,” that humbling admission of your past and eagerness to start afresh—today, today in a different way. You ARE.
Lent is the time to admit and violate your prejudices, habits, self-comfort, fear and denial. You look at Creation, at your loving Father, at the human beings around you—and realize the Life offered to you.
You admit how you blinded yourself to your faults—and so you let the light in. You open yourself to that significance—that “glory” of being a Child of God—sharing in not just transcendence, but immortality already. Your significance—your glory—the meaning of your life—like daffodils now rising from the ground—is the breath of spring air breathed into you to start your New Life—a Great Gift of God
