The Good News for the Day, July 20, 2017
Thursday of the Fifteenth Week of Ordinary Time (392)

First Reading

Hearing the voice of YHWH from the burning bush, Moses answered, “When I go back to the family of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you–and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ what am I going to say to them?” God replied, “I-AM-WHO-AM/YHWH.” Then he added, “This, then, is what you will tell the family of Israel: I-AM sent me to you.” (Exodus 3)

Gospel

Jesus says to His followers; “Come over to me, all of you working so hard, so overwhelmed—I will give you a rest area. Share my job of pulling people along—like paired oxen; learn beside me; I am kind, self-effacing at my core; here you’ll find rest for your heart. For my yoke means kind goodness, and the weight is not heavy at all.” (Matthew 11)

The real God is the reality behind all reality. He IS. Being his child means being a child here and now, a magnificent child loaded with gifts of life, time, breath, senses, parents, opportunity—and on and on.

This God—directly—gave you your first life—the one you live while reading this. You had no choice. Here you are. He offers you—as gift—a choice of a New Life, a Good News transformation that delivers you from slavery to all those other enslavers that cause you to die inside. Those are mistakes of culture which are wrong, human ways of thinking which are disdainful and arrogant, prejudices and additions—all the flaws of soul we all wrestle to defeat, the flaws that kill our happiness and peace.

The Good News is that you find rest in accepting that offer—in making the choice of acknowledging that Father’s love, that the ONE-WHO-IS loves you individually. Yes, there is work involved, and failures, but the Son of Man is your partner, the fellow laborer under one coupled oxen yoke.
