The good news for the day, June 7, 2017
Wednesday of the Ninth Week of Ordinary Time (355)
Some Sadducees (a sect whose members say there is no resurrection) came to Jesus and put this question to him: “Professor, Moses wrote for us, “If somebody’s brother dies, leaving a wife—but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise children for his brother.” Now imagine seven brothers. The first brother married a woman but died, leaving no offspring. The second brother, therefore, married her but he died, too, leaving no issue, either, and the third did the same. And all seven left no descendants. Last of all the woman died. At the resurrection—when they arise—whose wife will she be? For all seven had been married to her.” Jesus said to them, “Have you not gone so far astray? Because you do not know the Scriptures—nor the power of God! When people rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage; they are like angels in heaven. As for the dead being raised, have you not read the Torah—the Book of Moses, in the tale about the bush, how God told Moses, I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead but of the living. You have really gone off.“ (Mark 12)
Reflection reveals not just that some people try to trap Jesus and His followers—but that the answer to such trick questions is for you to grasp the deeper truths, the spiritual and authentic inspiration of life, your life.
The living God, the Timeless One, the God of Ancient Times and of Now, the Lord of Love and Marriage, of Heaven and Resurrection—the Master of Mystery—He is the One who inspires. He inspires you by reminding you of what is really permanent—love far deeper than mere marriage, faith in a love-life beyond mere death, and truth not a victim of “gotcha” questions.
Your belief in your loving, your humble faith in your growing Faith, and your deepening understanding of the mystery of God’s Truth—these inspire you past and beyond challenges that arise. The Good News is your grasp of that Mystery, your acceptance of boundless God, your peace with God’s ways.
