Thursday of the Seventh Week of Easter (300)

Looking above and beyond, Jesus prayed: “I pray not just for these here, but also for everyone who will believe in me through their message, so that they may all be in harmony, as you, Father, are “in” me and I “in” you—that they also may be in both of us—so that the world may believe that you sent me. I have given them the made them significantly different as you did with me—so that they may be in harmony, as we are—I in them and you in me—that they may be brought to a completion in our unity—that the world may know that you have sent me, and that you have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am in life they also may be with me there—to see the significance that you have given me, because you loved me before—in the fundamental plan of the world. Father, You are fair-to-all! The world has not known you, either—but I know you, and they know that you sent me. made known to them what your family means and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.” (John 17)

Over and over, you need to view what is said by the filter of loving—what Jesus is trying to say—about you and your own life and experiences, about your being loved and loving deeply, about your sense of belonging in the larger family of God—growing and accepting, but also thwarted and hurt, and seeing past words and into truth that is both your life’s Way and the End you share with Jesus. You know you are sent—like Him—to live among others as a living sign of their redemption.

In the end, Jesus stands with you for the mystery of character traits that are “outside of time”—You bring eternity into now—aware that He stands for what is permanent, timeless, eternal, unbounded by past and future. He and you share lasting—durable—traits of humility, service, acceptance, joy and love always growing. These are part of you. They are the Spirit’s freedom from the past and hope for the future. These traits are you at your deepest, noblest, and undying self…& the world comes to believe that, with Jesus, you are sent from God.
