The good news for the day, May 30, 2017
Tuesday of the Seventh Week of Easter (298)

Jesus looks above and beyond, and says: “Father, the moment has come. Let people know the meaning of Your child, so that your child may reveal what You mean—just as you have given him responsibility for all people, so that your child may provide a boundless life to everybody you have given Your child. Now this is boundless life, that people should appreciate who You are, the only true God, as well as the one whom You have sent, Jesus Messiah. I have revealed who You are on earth by doing the work you gave me to do. Now—show people what I mean to them—Father—alongside you, with the significance that I have had with you in realms outside of time. I have revealed what Your Family means to those whom You gave me out of this realm. They have belonged to You, and You gave them to me, and they have done what You have told them to do. Now—they realize everything you gave me is from You, because the words You gave to me I have handed onto them. They accepted them and truly understood that I have come from You, and they have believed that You sent me. I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the people You have given me, because they are Yours, and everything of mine is Yours and everything of Yours is mine, and I have become important in them I will no longer be in the world, but they are in this world, while I am coming to you.” (Matthew 17)

Sometimes an image helps us see the point. Think of the “world(s)” as a translucent coin. On one side is engraved our daily busy-ness—jobs, house, bills, children, distractions, fun, and friends. On the other side—hidden from view in some ways—is another world altogether—of love, maturity, permanence, appreciation and peace. Both are parts of the whole, but, dimly, vaguely, you see that other world only through this side, through daily “this world” actions.

On that side—and this is the good news, your belief—lies the meaning of it all, the joy of humility and the permanence of caring love. Without that wordless side hidden in so many ways from you—life lacks value; you are not Living. That side, though, glows with God, the gift of all creation to you, and mutual responsibility for others. A one-sided coin is a collector’s sterile item; this two-sided coin in your pocket is valuable coinage—a priceless, cherished treasure!
