Saturday of the Sixth Week of Easter (296)

Jesus says to His friends; “Here is the truth: Anything you ask the Father as part of Family—He will give it to you. Up till now you have not asked anything by using the Family Name; ask and you will get it, so that you may be completely happy. I have been talking with you about indirectly. The time is approaching when I will no longer speak to you in poetic images—I will tell you clearly about the Father. When that time comes, you will ask for something as part of the Family. I am not saying that I will ask the Father for you—the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I have come from God. I have come from the Father and have come into this world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”  (John 16)

The Father—the Father of Jesus and the Father of Creation—your “real” father in the mind and heart of Jesus—loves you. You every breath is His Gift. The intricacy of your flesh and body is what He has knit together. Your parents and DNA, culture and time, skin color and IQ, siblings and uniqueness—all precious and special favors granted you—not just at birth, but as you grew and grow.

So when you talk with Our Father—what do you ask?  For “bread,” “forgiveness,” and “deliver us from evil”—that’s the prayer, the petitioning for which you turn to Your “Dad.”

Bread—makes sense. He is the “breadwinner” for sure in This Family. “Forgive us”—makes sense, too. Our Father wants the kids to behave nice to one another. Ask any parent. Kids—you and me—we need help in this “getting along” department. You can get help here, Big Brother Jesus assures you.

“Deliver us from evil.”—not just me, but “us.”  Not help me with this headache—though you can—not let me find a parking spot—though you can—but the real evil is self-deception, pride, and avoidance of care got others. Think Family—you and I and He and she—love ‘em all. We’re family.
