The good news for the day January 24, 2017

Tuesday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time (318)

The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house where Jesus was staying They were standing outside; they sent word to Jesus inside and were calling out to Him. In the crowd seated around Him, some remarked, “Your mother and your brothers and your sisters are outside—that is them asking for you.” He said to these in reply, “Who really are my mother and my brothers?” Gazing around at the ones seated in the circle around Him, He said, “Right here are my mother and my brothers; whoever keeps doing the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” (Mark 3)

Here are my mother, my brothers, my sisters. At a restaurant or movie, a friendly get-together over watching football, a trek together to a camping ground, a few folks sitting together at a bar—we have people beside us—strangers and friends, family and bystanders, saints and sinners.

Here is the moment whether you take the words of Jesus seriously. Are you his “mother”? In two ways, I believe Jesus speaks the truth to each of us. In one way—you conceive and then bring Jesus into the world—you can make his acts of kindness, compassion, forgiveness and healing happen in a world of need. With God as our Father, you can ‘beget’ a Presence of the Spirit of Jesus—Jesus Himself into here and now; people see your behavior, thank God for it, and accept the grace of His Being Here Now.

In another way, you are a mother of Jesus You are a person of faith—you see in the movie house and restaurant, the football get-together and the classroom and the street—you SEE men, women and children as your family—a family that needs your nurturing, your bringing them to Life, your feeding them the truth, peace and justice they hunger for. You provide the sense of “home”—a “place to call home” that so often is the bailiwick of the mother in the family. It is the welcome Jesus exhibited to tax collectors and notorious sinners and prostitutes—the open-arms of coming home. You provide the “kingdom of heaven” as Their home.
