The Good News for today
Jesus sent 10 lepers check their health, and as they went, “…they were healed.
” … One of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, praising God loudly; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked Him. (He was a Samaritan.) Jesus responded, “Ten were cleansed, weren’t they? Where are the other nine? Has nobody except this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Then Jesus said to the man, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” (Luke 17)
What is the Good News for You in this event? Jesus cures a bunch of lepers. Only one comes back grateful—and then in very human fashion—Jesus seems to scold the grateful one for the failure of the ungrateful ones. But no, Jesus tells the Samaritan-foreigner to get up off the ground and get one with life, “Your faith has saved you.”
You are the grateful foreigner—the doubly-outsided sufferer who appreciates someone’s involvement in his condition. You are being healed—sent towards the powers-that-be—grateful for the intrinsic change happening. You are being healed of being an “outsider,” of suffering disdainful distance from others You are being helped back into living faith, a grateful Life acknowledging the kindness of strangers, to re-enter life in a new way.
In other words, you are being saved—not as a once-for-all-and-ended—but a lifetime of being healed—unlike others who neither realize nor appreciate benefits that come, the miracles and insights of change. The Good News is your faith, your being truly alive while so many others sleepwalk away. Some persons, escaping death, start to live; others shrug and drift on. It is your good fortune and good news to Start Anew, to start to live Now! Start to live the Real Life!
