June 25, 2015 – The good news for today
Jesus talks to Christians here—the dedicated ones: ”Many people will say to me on judgment day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your Name? Didn’t we get demons out of people in your name? Didn’t we do impressive things in your name?’
’Then I will declare to them solemnly, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.’
Resist your mischievous instincts—the part of you that avoids forgiveness, that considers you superior to others, and that rationalizes indifference and inaction. No, follow Jesus; spread healing, joy, patience and help like a warm light, to escalate human bonds of communication and involvement. View everybody else as not inferior, but as able to enrich you. Consider your enemies your brothers and sisters. Overcome fear by believing in individuals and in their wounded, secret hearts of hope.
“Didn’t I prophesy in your Name?”—you ask—“Didn’t I preach as an ordained man or woman of God about the truth of the doctrines on our church? Didn’t I say in your name what the Bible taught and what people wanted to hear—that slavery is OK, that women are less than men, and that wealth comes as a sign of God’s blessings? It says so in the Bible! Along with everybody else, I preached these things; I “prophesied,” taught and preached these natural—but hateful, harmful and toxic—instincts in human nature, failing to sort out the love which the Father has, and offering instead my mechanical, automatic and inhuman interpretation of the Bible—my own view and not the generous One of our Father in heaven.”
Jesus says over and over than not the letter, but the spirit matters. Love one another in the family of God; just let what you do prophesy and preach. Be creative and honest in your affection and your responsibility to one another; then the demons of addiction, despair and weakness will flee. Let your “impressive” deeds go unheralded, let them be acts of courageous kindness no one knows.
That is the Good News—that is how you Do the Will of Our One Father. You see your brother Jesus in His family. He knows you in your service of one another.
